1. Picasa


Picasa, first on the list of Top Five Best Photo Editing Software, was originally created by idea-lab in year 2002 but just after two years of creation, Google acquired this software. Before getting detailed knowledge about Picasa, it’s worthwhile to take a look on its name first. ‘Picasa’ is actually a blend of a Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso’s name. After being acquired by Google, the software app can be downloaded and operated free of cost. This app is very handy to use and it operates only with the Windows Operating System. Some of the features that Picasa offers to its users include cropping, brightness adjustments and special effects etc.


 


2. GIMP


GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program and is used primarily as a re-touching and editing tool. The most prevalent operating systems with which GIMP works well include Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux and Apple Mac OS X. The creators of this photo editing software were two students at University of California, Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis, who created it as their semester project in 1995. This software enables its valued users to work with the most intricate procedures pragmatically and efficiently. Moreover, it also assists its users in many activities like composition and authoring.


 


3. IrfanView


Irfan Skiljan created this software in 1996 and can be used free of cost for non-commercial purposes. But those who want employing it for commercial purposes have to pay the price. Named after its inventor Irfan Skiljan, this program can operate with several operating systems from Windows 95 to Windows 2007. Its ability to view, edit and convert image files plus play audio/video files brings it to third spot on the list of top five best photo editing software. Moreover, Irfanviwe can support many different file types such as GIF, JPEG, PNG and BMP etc.


 


4. PhotoPlus 6


On number four we have PhotoPlus 6 software. Though, in the beginning, this advanced software failed to get place in market since it was a paid one, but it’s enjoying popularity among the IT lovers these days because now it’s available for free downloading. The salient features of PhotPlus 6 include image maps and image Slicing, export optimizer, photo enhancement tools and third-party plug in support.


 


5. Paint.NET


It was formed by Rick Brewster as his semester project at the Washington State University. It was most advanced form of Microsoft Paint that featured several new features. Paint.NET was actually created for the learners and beginners but it is equally beneficial for the experienced users too. The feature that distinguishes it from other softwares is the abysmal undo option offered at your disposal. Paint.NET sits at fifth position on the list of top five best photo editing software.
