Top Five Biggest Football Stadiums in the World


The following list of Top Five Biggest Football Stadiums in the World doesn’t include multi-purpose stadiums like Rungrado May Day Stadium, North Korea’s capacity of with150, 000 viewers, which hosts anything from public-executions to mass acrobatic performances. Instead, we have enlisted stadiums that are primarily used for hosting football matches.


1. Estadio Azteca, Mexico City


Located in Santa Ursula, Mexico City, Estadio Azteca is the second among the top five biggest football stadiums in the world. It is official home ground for the Mexican national football team and Mexican team Club América. The stadium was opened officially on May 29, 1966 and it has the honor of being the only stadium to host two FIFA World Cup Finals- 1970 World Cup final between Italy and Brazil and 1986 World Cup final between Germany and Argentine. Total capacity of the stadium is 105,064.


2. The Azadi Stadium, Tehran


Home stadium of the Iran national football team and the clubs Persepolis and Esteghlal FC, the Azadi Stadium is a part of Azadi Sports Complex, which was constructed to host 7th Asian Games in 1974, and is surrounded by several amenities including football training pitches and indoor futsal and volleyball courts. The 100,000 people capacity stadium is the biggest stadium in the Middle East. The Azadi stadium has hosted two West Asian Football Federation Championships besides and two Asian Club Championships so far.


3. Camp Nou, Barcelona


The Camp Nou is the largest stadium in Europe. The 99,354 capacity stadium is owned by the Futbol Club Barcelona (FC Barcelona) since its inauguration in 1957. The stadium has served as venue for several international fixtures, including the football competition at the 1992 Summer Olympics and two UEFA Champions League finals. Camp Nou is ranked 11th largest stadium in the world.


4. Maracana, Rio de Janeiro


Once the largest stadium in the world, the Maracana now takes fourth spot on the list of the top five biggest football stadiums in the world. The stadium which no hosts 95,000 spectators is famous for having packed in 210,000 spectators for a world cup fixture between Uruguay and Brazil in the year 1950.


5. The Wembley Stadium, Dortmund


Opened officially in 2007, the Wembley Stadium is built on the site of the old Wembley Stadium which was demolished in 2003. Home of the stadium of the English national football team can seat 90,000 fans at a time. It is the second largest stadium in Europe and often referred as “The Twin Towers.”  Wembley is ranked last on our list of top five biggest football stadiums in the world.
