Top Five Causes of Illiteracy in the World

The development of a country is quite impossible if its citizens are unqualified. The countries with higher literacy rate grow at much faster rate than those whose illiteracy rate is relatively higher. Now, the question here is what are the causes of illiteracy in a country? Mentioned below are Top Five Causes of Illiteracy in the World. Scroll down to figure out those causes.

1. Economic Backwardness or Poverty:

Economic backwardness or poverty is the chief cause of illiteracy in the world. You can see, economically weak countries have higher rate of illiteracy than the others. The first and foremost necessity of human being is to satisfy his hunger, so, how children can study if they need to fill their stomach first? In such situation, their priority will definitely be to earn, not to get education.

2. Poor Implementation of Educational Programs

Another issue which contributes a lot to lack of education is poor implementation of education programs. Usually some educational institutions plus government agencies assigned to supervise the major educational programs in their respective countries face this issue. Government squanders a large amount of money on educational programs but thanks to improper execution of these programs with poor planning ruins all the efforts made by the government.

3. High Emigration Rate

Third of the top five causes of illiteracy in the world is high emigration rate. The employment opportunities as well as the career growth offshore lure families to migrate to the highly developed countries such as US, Canada, UK etc. This high emigration rate greatly affects kids’ education. The environmental and language differences badly affect the progress of the children. Moreover, racial discrimination, mockery, and inequality of all sorts some people face in the other countries also dishearten them to get education, and all these issues collectively lead towards increase in the rate of illiteracy.

4. Prefer Working over Studying

Prefer working over studying is also a common cause of illiteracy. It’s a general observation that when someone starts earning, he just forgets about completing education and earning turn out to be the sole aim of his life. While many other factors and reasons are also there, but the main reason why someone start working at an early age is the lack of financial resources. Initially, a person starts working temporarily just for the sake of saving some money, but when he becomes use to the scope of the job, the wish to continue studies dies.

5. Lack of Funds

Last among the top five causes of illiteracy in the world is lack of funds. On this part, it doesn’t refer to financial abilities of people to send their children to school but to the funds that the government is supposed to allocate to an area. There are some countries that are poor or inefficient enough to sustain the basic educational needs, especially providing new facilities, and establishing schools and such situation in turn leads to increase in illiteracy rate.
