Top Five Leading Wicket Taking Bowlers in Tests


Frustrating the opponent batsman with the magic of figures and long-lasting marathons is an art. Especially, when it comes to Test cricket, the task becomes more tough. There are numerous bowlers who remained a nightmare for batsmen for decades, mentioning a specific name would be perhaps unfair. However, in regard to the most wickets in Tests, we have arranged a list of the top five leading wicket taking bowlers in Tests.


1. Muttiah Muralitharan


With 800 Test wickets, former Sri Lankan bowler Muttiah Muralitharan is leading the list of top five leading wicket taking bowlers in Tests. He was born in 1972 and made his debut in 1992, at the age of 20, against Australia wherein he managed to grab 3 wickets for 141 runs. He hanged the boots after registering his 800th wicket in the year 2010 and nowadays he is an important figure of IPL’s franchise Chennai Super kings. Murali was rated the Greatest Test Bowler Ever by Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack in 2002.


2. Shane Warne


The former Australian spinner Shane Warne debuted his international career in the same year as Muralitharan, 1992. During his 15-year career he claimed more than 700 Test and over 200 ODI wickets. He was highest Test wicket taker with 708 Test wickets before being surpassed by the milestone Murali in Dec. 2007. He quitted the international cricket career in Jan. 2007.


3. Anil Kumble


Former Indian skipper and right-arm leg spinner, Anil Kumble, is ranked third highest wicket tacking bowler in the Test cricket. In his 18-year career 1990-2008, he grabbed 619 Test and 337 ODI wickets. He is the only Indian bowler to claim more than 600 wickets. Moreover, he also holds the record of claiming all ten wickets in a Test innings. He announced retirement in Nov. 2008 after sustaining left little-finger injury while attempting a catch off Matthew Hayden.


4. Glenn McGrath


Nicknamed Pigeon, Aussies’ fast-medium bowler who made great contribution to Australia’s domination of world cricket, Glenn McGrath made his Test debut in 1993. In 2005, he surpassed West Indies’ Courteny Walsh and became the highest wicket taker fast bowler. He also holds the record for the most wickets in Cricket World Cup. He retired from international cricket in 2006.


5. Courtney Walsh


Born in 1962, the West Indies paceman Courtney Walsh is sitting at the last spot on the list of top five leading wicket taking bowlers in Tests with more than 500 wickets. He made his first appearance in the international match in 1984 against Australia in Perth and managed to claim 2 wickets for 43 runs. He snatched the title of leading highest wicket taker from Kapil Dev in 2000.
