Top Five Universities in Pakistan


1. University of the Punjab




The top ranked university of Pakistan “University of the Punjab” – established in 1982 – is the oldest and biggest University of the country. After the establishment of three universities in Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras, Punjab University was the 4th to be established by the British rulers in the Indian subcontinent. The number of University’s regular students is 25000, while 147,000 students are linked with Punjab University through 434 affiliated colleges. University of the Punjab located at Lahore, comprises 14 faculties with 10 colleges, 63 other departments and institutions. Almost 650 permanent faculty members have been providing their services in teaching and research sections.


2. Lahore University of Management Sciences



The second name in the list of “top five universities in Pakistan” is Lahore University of Management Sciences. The institution established in 1984 is well-known by its acronym LUMS. The highly illustrious theoretical research university had been established by a group of professionals and industrialists of Pakistan’s.  Lahore University of Management Sciences is holding the top position amid the institutes, which offer degrees in IT or Business Management in South Asia. Last year an internationally well-known Pakistani scholar Dr. Adil Najam took the charge of LUMS as 3rd Vice Chancellor.


3. National University of Sciences and Technology



National University of Sciences and Technology, NUST, is one of the multi-campus universities in Pakistan. The main campus is situated in Islamabad, while the other branches are located in Karachi, Rawalpindi and Risalpur. The university established by Pakistani government in 1981, is the 1st model university like KAIST of Korea. NUST played a vital role in the development of higher scientific education in Pakistan. NUST is currently ranked 108th in Asian universities rankings but in the top five universities of Pakistan it is securing third position.


4. National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences



The next name in the list of top five universities in Pakistan is the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences that is one of the foremost technical universities. The university established in 1985, was Pakistan’s first multi-campus university, headquarter is located in Islamabad, while the other campuses at Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Faisalabad. The university offers Ph.D., graduate and undergraduate programs in Business Administration, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science.



The University of Karachi is also one of the top five universities in Pakistan. It has approximately more 24,000 regular students. In 1951, University of Karachi was established by government as a Federal University but its status was converted to university of the province of Sindh after the declaration of Islamabad as capital in 1962. The university campus is located 12 km away from the central Karachi and is covering the area of over 1,279 acres.
