1.      Library of Congress


Constructed in the beginning of nineteenth century, Library of Congress is ranked as the largest library in the world. Currently, it has 151, 785, 778 items, including over 30,000,000 books in almost every language. Located in Washington D.C, this is the oldest library in United States. It aims to provide info about science, culture, philosophy and history. Furthermore, down to its collection and design, this library is used in several movies such as National Treasure 2.


2.      National Library of China


Not only it is sitting at second spot on our list of top five biggest libraries in the world, the National Library of China or “NLC†is the largest library in the Asia continent. It was opened in 1909 in Beijing and its size is around 26, 310, 000 volumes. The magnificent building of the Chinese national library currently holds almost 26.3 million books in more than 115 languages and a rich collection of Chinese historical documents and writings. Though, the library was established in 1909 but it was opened to the public after the Xinhai Revolution in 1912. Moreover, the library also has many foreign practice books.


3.      Library and Archives Canada


Officially known as national memory institution, the Library and Archives of Canada was established in 1953 in Ottawa. It actually aims at preserving and maintaining the Canadian historical records. Besides being the third largest library of the world, the library is also among the main attractions of Canada. Currently this 48-room library holds 26, 006, 054 books. One very unique thing about national library of Canada is that it also holds collection of Canadian music in the form of tapes, music sheets, persona papers and sound recordings etc.


 4.      German National Library


The German National Library was established in 1912 with an aim to main German official records. While, publications in other languages are also there in the library, but most of the collection is in German language. Currently, Deutsche Nationalbibliothek contains 25.4 million items, wherein 24, 487, 010 of which are books. Besides the local people, foreigners are also allowed to read books after they present their valid passport to the library administration.


 5.      The British Library


With total 150 million items, including 23, 50, 000 books, the British Library is the fifth among top five biggest libraries in the world. The oldest collection which this library contains dates back to 2,000 B.C.
