Top Five Most Famous Walls in the World


The only famous wall about which almost all of you’ve heard is the Great Wall of China. But in fact, there are many other famous walls too about which very few of us are familiar.  In fact, me too was not familiar with them before compiling this list. This list contains brief info about top five most famous walls in the world. Read it! You’ll surely find it informative.


1. The Great Wall of China


 The Great Wall of China doesn’t need introduction at all. It was erected in 7th century BC, on the command of first emperor of Qin dynast, Shi Huangdi., for defense purposes. It’s worthwhile to know that Mongols were the major threat for several nations, including China, at that time.  In addition, other purposes of this 8,850 kilometers long wall include border controls, regulation or encouragement of trade, the control of migration and allowing the imposition of duties on merchandises transported along the Silk Road. The Chinese government spends millions of bucks on the maintenance of the Great Wall and that’s the reason it’s in excellent shape even after almost 2,000 years of construction.


2. The Western Wall


Located in the Old city of Jerusalem, the Western Wall was constructed around 19 BCE. There are many other names of this wall as well, such as Wailing Wall or Kotel. 


3. The Walls of Babylon


Third on our list of top five most famous walls in the world are, The Walls of Babylon.  The walls, about which Antipater of Sidon mentioned in his poem, is the oldest among the seven wonders of the ancient world. After their expiration, the Walls of Babylon were replaced by the Lighthouse of Alexandria on the list. Blue glassy tiles featuring interchanging rows of dragons and aurochs were used for the construction of both the walls and gate were constructed of blue glazed tiles with interchanging rows of bas-relief dragons and aurochs. The walls were restored and reconstructed on the remnants in 1983 on the command of Saddam Hussein.


4. Sacsayhuamán


Sacsayhuamán is a walled complex on the northern borders of the city of Cusco, Peru, the former capital of the Inca Empire. Cusco was designed in the form of Puma, an animal that use to symbolize Inca Empire, the river Tullumayo as its spine, and the mountain of Sacsayhuamán as its head.


5. The Great Zimbabwe


And, the last place on our list of top five most famus walls in the world is secured by The Great Zimbabwe, a complex of stone ruins spread out over a great region in current Zimbabwe. The construction of this wall incepted in the 11th century and it took 300 for the completion of the project. That Great Zimbabwe was believed to have almost 18,000 inhabitants at its peak.
