Top Five World Famous Statues


Top 10 Statues of the world comprises of statues built by mankind. Even in the ancient times, people used to create different statues as a symbol of wonder, loyalty, nationality, amusement and joy of victory. Below given is a list of top five world famous statues. 1.       Moai, Easter Island


Located on one of the world’s remotest islands, Easter Island, these monolithic statues were sculpted by Polynesian colonizers almost between 1250-1500 AD. Paro was the tallest among all the Moai erected. Its height was approximately about 10 meters and weight was 75 tons. The heaviest sculptured was a stumpier but thicker Moai weighing almost 86 tons. The Moais were still standing when Europeans first paid a visit to the island, but most of them destroyed later on during conflicts between different clans. However, about fifty of them have been re-erected on Easter Island or museums somewhere else.


2.       Christ the Redeemer, Rio De Janeiro


Located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the peak of 700 meters high Corcovado Mountain, Christ the Redeemer is the only Brazilian wonder of the world.  The construction of this statute of Jesus Christ was incepted in the year 1922 and it took nine years in the completion of the project. The statue is 39.6 meters tall, and 30 meters wide and hence is considered the second Art Deco statue in the world after the statue of Cristo de la Concordia. Furthermore, it has become an icon of Rio and Brazil.


3.       The Statue of Liberty


The Statue of Liberty, an independence-day gift from French people to the United States, stands upon Liberty Island and is third among the top five world famous statues. The statue was designed by Frédéric Bartholdi and its erection was completed in July 1884. From the year of its dedication, 1886, until the jet-age, it was often one of the first glimpses of the US for millions of migrants.


4.       The Great Sphinx


Not only it is one among the largest and oldest statues in the world, the Great Sphinx, is also ranked as the largest monolithic statue. Though, no precise knowledge about its age is available and many basic facts about the structure such as when and by whom it was erected and who was the model for the face etc, but it is believed to be erected in 2500 BC. The statute manages to attract a large number of people annually and hence contributes a lot to the state’s economy.


5.       David


Carved by Michelangelo from 1501-1504, the statue of David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture. The 5.17 meter marble statue represents the Biblical King David stripped. Unlike earlier depictions of David which depict the hero after his triumph over Goliath, Michelangelo opted to represent David before the fight envisioning the battle yet to come. The famous statue was moved to Accademia Gallery in Florence, Italy, in 1873 for the sake of protecting it from damage. And a replica was placed at the original location. David is the last on our list of top five world famous statues.
